Honors College

Language Proficiency

Communicating beyond English

The ability to communicate in a language other than English is becoming imperative to participate and lead in today's global marketplace.  The new Honors College curriculum helps students master the requirement.

Honors College students beginning their academic work in fall 2008 and beyond must demonstrate proficiency in a second language by the time they graduate.  Requirements are detailed in the Honors College Foreign Language Requirement document.

Standardized testing is available that measures reading, writing, and speaking language skills.  Languages available for testing include French, Italian, Spanish, German, Chinese, and Japanese.

For students pursuing alternative paths to fluency (e.g. internships, study abroad, etc.) or who have significant background in a foreign language, a special portfolio of plans and achievements may be prepared. See the Honors College Foreign Language Requirement document for details.
