Invitation to Commit to Excellence
Honors College students are undergraduates who are renowned for their well-developed personal and professional leadership skills, and also for their considerable service activities impacting a wide variety of local, national, and international communities.
The faculty in the Honors College prepare assignments that encourage students to develop special skills to achieve success both within the major and outside the major.
We invite Honors College students to commit to each of the following "Six Goals of the Honors College" as they pursue higher education at Washington State University.
Critical and Creative Thinking
I will develop intellectual reasoning through research and knowledge of historical context and demonstrate my ability to think critically and creatively by:
- Checking assumptions in my work and the work of others.
- Considering multiple perspectives from various people.
Quantitative and Symbolic Reasoning
I will demonstrate quantitative and symbolic reasoning by:
- Comprehending numeric and symbolic representations to express, interpret, challenge, explain, and draw conclusions.
- Applying quantitative tools and basic computer skills to solve problems.
Information Literacy
I will demonstrate information literacy by:
- Critically evaluating library catalogs, databases, and the Internet as I gather relevant information.
- Synthesizing research information into written reports and oral presentations.
Communication
I will write and speak effectively by:
- Using appropriate oral, written, and visual means for each audience.
- Being proficient in at least two languages.
- Listening effectively.
Self in Society
I will demonstrate a sense of self in society by:
- Expressing how my values or ethical system shapes my inquiries and actions.
- Interacting effectively with others of similar and diverse cultures, values, and perspectives.
Disciplinary Knowledge
I will develop a disciplinary specialty and demonstrate knowledge in that specialty by:
- Choosing the appropriate methodology and theoretical framework to understand a problem or answer a question.
- Understanding the importance of interdisciplinary research and information synthesis.
