From Start to Finish
It is never too early to begin thinking about a thesis topic, but it should be something that intrigues you and about which you want to know more.
You must start your thesis in your junior year. Therefore, in your sophomore year you must ...
- identify a thesis advisor who will mentor and guide you throughout the process.
- submit an Honors Thesis Proposal for approval as soon as it is completed and approved by your thesis advisor. At the latest, this must be done before the end of the second semester of your junior year. Deadlines are the 10th of November, April, and July for the following spring, summer, or fall semesters, respectively.
- consider enrolling in UH 398 (Honors Thesis Proposal Seminar), designed to help you identify an advisor and develop a thesis proposal. Juniors may also take this one-credit class.
Once your thesis proposal has been approved by the Honors College ...
- you will be enrolled in UH 450, "Honors Thesis or Project." There is no formal course to attend; 1-4 credits are available for your thesis work. A total of 3 credits for thesis work is required to graduate from the Honors College.
Presenting your Honors Thesis involves two steps ...
- One spiral-bound copy of your written thesis is due the Monday of the week before your oral presentation.
- Oral presentations occur in the seventh week of fall and spring semesters, and on an ad hoc basis in summer. With the exception of WHETS presentation, all presentations (with rare exceptions) are in Honors Hall, the home of the Honors College.
You are given your evaluation at the conclusion of your oral presentation. Students are graded with "excellent," "pass," "needs major/minor revision," or "fail." Students with theses that receive...
- "needs major/minor revision" have 2-3 weeks to make all corrections, get approval of the changes, and resubmit 1 new spiral-bound copy of the thesis.
- "fail" will need to complete the thesis to the satisfaction of the advisor and college and submit 1 new copy.
