SUMMARY:An Assessment of Ecuador's Promises from the Paris-Climate Agreement Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Presentation for the Honors College Certificate of Global Competencies\nMonday\, December 7\, 2020\, 1:10 p.m.\nEverybody Welcome!\nKainoa Torres (Strategic Communication\, 2021)\nAn Assessment of Ecuador’s Promises from the Paris-Climate Agreement\nZOOM LINK: https://wsu.zoom.us/j/91758135364   \nThe Ecuadorian Amazon is one of the most biodiverse areas on the planet\, home to at least nine different indigenous societies.  However\, the country’s economy is heavily dependent on oil extraction.  The extraction began in the 1920s.  By 2000\, an oil pipeline had been constructed\, and Ecuadorian president Gustavo Noboa agreed to the construction of a second.  Due to its long history of oil dependency\, Ecuador made promises during the Paris Climate Agreement of 2015 to manage water usage\, prevent/mitigate pollution\, and invest in renewable energy rather than oil.  CO2 levels in Ecuador began to decline following the conference\, but they have since risen back to the point they were at.  Currently\, oil production only generates a fraction of the economic GDP it produced in 2013.  Oil production is struggling to grow\, which negatively affects the economy.  Some believe that Ecuador’s economy may collapse entirely if the oil industry does not bounce back. \n \n(Photographer June Bateman) \nFor further information please contact the Honors College at honors@wsu.edu \n

SUMMARY:Residential Energy Use and Efficiency Internationally Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Presentation for the Honors College Certificate of Global Competencies\nFriday\, December 4\, 2020\, 1:10 p.m. \nEverybody welcome!\nPatrick Robichaud (BS Civil Engineering\, 2021):\n \nResidential Energy Use and Efficiency Internationally \nZOOM LINK: https://wsu.zoom.us/j/91535821871     \nEnergy is key to human survival. Where and how humans have gotten their energy has changed over time and the total amount needed has increased as the population of the world has grown. Since the industrial revolution coal\, oil and gas have been the main energy sources which are the main contributors to anthropogenic climate change. Climate change is fundamentally altering our world. The changing climate is one of the reasons that improving energy use and efficiency is necessary. Energy efficiency\, use\, and generation varies between low and high income countries along with geographic location. Residential or home energy use is one of the places most people have control over and was the topic of my senior design project. Residential energy consumption is analyzed for countries around the world and compared to the US. To meet the challenges of climate change there needs to be better understanding of energy use that will allow for reducing and improving our energy usage. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n \nFor further information please contact the Honors College at honors@wsu.edu \n
