What if every student could enroll in a MESI class…

Cooper Greenfield
Cooper Greenfield (’20 Human Resource Management)

“If every student on campus enrolled in a Mindfulness-Based Emotional and Social Intelligence (MESI) class to increase their self-awareness, empathy and leadership effectiveness we’d see a much brighter Pullman campus. The Cougs-help-Cougs mentality that we already see in our community is a great show of empathy and compassion already existing in Coug culture. Though, it has its limits. I think if everyone takes a MESI course, they can see that this Cougs-help-Cougs mentality can extend across the world and take on a deeper level of people-help-people. We are all seeking a meaningful life, free of suffering, where we can love/be loved, and be happy. These classes show us how much impact we have on each other as people and how much power we have to uplift those around us.”

Student Networking Event and Industry Panel Discussion

On Friday, September 14, the WSU Honors College will host its first annual Student Networking Event and Industry Panel Discussion beginning at 4:00 p.m. in Pullman.

The Student Networking Event is an opportunity for Honors College students to enhance their professional networking skills in various settings. Because this is a networking event, students are advised not to bring their resumes; instead, students will focus on how to confidently network with potential employers, develop an elevator pitch, and highlight accomplishments and goals. Students are encouraged to distribute their business cards at the event.

Following the one-hour networking event, a panel discussion will take place for students to hear firsthand from industry experts on best practices in today’s workplace and professional tips for hiring success!

This is an opportunity for students to meet with advisory board members of the Honors College who represent a broad range of industries including consulting, technology, law, engineering, education and health care.

Food and beverage will be provided! Business dress is recommended.

Registered students must attend one 30-minute workshop session scheduled several days prior to event. The workshops will take place in Elmina White Honors Hall on Monday, September 10 at 5:00 p.m. and Wednesday, September 12 at 7:30 a.m. Again, you only need to attend one of the above sessions.

Honors Alumnus, Pianist, Eric McElroy to perform at The Good Shepherd Center, Seattle

Contemporary music for solo piano (Frederic Rzewski, Ian Venables, Howard Skempton, John Joubert, and Ken Benshoof), Wayward Music Series.

Eric McElroyAmerican pianist and composer Eric McElroy has performed throughout the United States and Europe, garnering numerous awards at both state and national competitions. A committed advocate for lesser-known repertoire, Eric has given regional premieres of pieces by American and British composers, including John Ireland, Arnold Bax, William Baines, and Lord Berners. As a collaborative pianist he has performed in some of Europe’s most distinguished concert halls, notably the Musikverein, Wiener Konzerthaus, Birmingham Town Hall, Symphony Hall, and the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels (BOZAR).

In addition to presenting traditional programs, Eric has explored various alternatives to the standard concert format, and he has designed a number of themed lecture-recitals which explore the cultural and historical intersections of music with other fields such as history, literature, and poetry. Recent examples of this are his programs “Sounds of the American Piano” and “The Slaughter of the Times: English Piano Music and the First World War”, the latter of which was premiered at the Robert Graves Society annual conference at Oxford University (St. John’s College) in 2016. Eric’s wide-ranging interests in academia have led to several scholarly projects, and he is currently working in conjunction with the William Baines Estate to prepare selected works by English composer William Baines for publication in 2018.
