Using HONORS- Courses to Satisfy Degree Requirements
Not sure whether you need to take a certain course or meet a degree requirement because you are in the Honors College? Be sure to ask your major/minor advisor whether any Honors College courses can be used as substitutions for degree requirements.
Think that a specific HONORS-prefix course may satisfy a specific degree (major/minor) requirement? Here’s how to find out:
- Schedule an appointment with your major advisor
- Bring the section description and syllabus for the course you took. If you haven’t yet taken the course, you can request the course syllabus by contacting the section instructor directly.
- Discuss the course content with your major advisor.
- Your major advisor will guide you through the completion of any petition forms required by your degree granting unit to complete the course exception or waiver
First-semester course planning is typically accomplished during Alive! or the Week of Welcome orientation week.
Freshmen advising is typically done in group meetings. Honors faculty advisors are also available for individual sessions to help first-year students map their Honors academic plans. They will also discuss such topics as foreign language studies, study abroad opportunities, and thesis plans.
Sophomore, junior, and senior advising appointments are individual meetings.
Priority registration is available to Honors students to ensure they get into the best courses available.
Although most students will have certified into a major and have an advisor in that college by their junior year, juniors must meet with an Honors advisor at least once during the fall or spring semester. We also suggest that seniors plan to meet with an advisor during their final year.
Thesis Advising
Students select faculty mentors to be their thesis advisors. Typically, these will be professors from the student’s major or the field on which the thesis is focused. The thesis advisor works closely with the Honors College thesis director and follows uniform guidelines.
Letters of Recommendation
Many Honors students go on to graduate or professional school, and need letters of recommendation from Honors faculty. If you need a letter, please fill out a Request for Letter of Recommendation. You can email the form to honors@wsu.edu, drop it by 130 Honors Hall, or mail it to PO Box 642012, Pullman WA 99164-2012. Note that a minimum of two weeks is required to complete a letter of recommendation.
