An Assessment of Ecuador’s Promises from the Paris-Climate Agreement

The Ecuadorian Amazon is one of the most biodiverse areas on the planet, home to at least nine different indigenous societies. However, the country’s economy is heavily dependent on oil extraction. The extraction began in the 1920s. By 2000, an oil pipeline had been constructed, and Ecuadorian president Gustavo Noboa agreed to the construction of a second. Due to its long history of oil dependency, Ecuador made promises during the Paris Climate Agreement of 2015 to manage water usage, prevent/mitigate pollution, and invest in renewable energy rather than oil. CO2 levels in Ecuador began to decline following the conference, but they have since risen back to the point they were at. Currently, oil production only generates a fraction of the economic GDP it produced in 2013. Oil production is struggling to grow, which negatively affects the economy. Some believe that Ecuador’s economy may collapse entirely if the oil industry does not bounce back.
