The WSU veterinary medicine interview
The WSU College of Veterinary Medicine interview consists of a 30-minute personal interview with two to three members of the admissions committee and representatives of the Honors College.
The personal interview will be used to clarify any issues arising from the academic and non-academic evaluation and to assess the applicant’s maturity, motivation, communication skills, knowledge of the profession, and desire to contribute to society through veterinary medicine.
How to prepare for the interview
The following are tips to help prospective vet students prepare before their interview:
- Practice speaking in front of a mirror or with peers and have them evaluate you
- Keep up to date on new medical discoveries or laws that relate to animals or the veterinary medicine field
- Be prepared to speak about your work experience, extracurricular activities, or research projects. Use examples.
- Be prepared to ask the committee questions
The following tips will help students during their interview:
- Dress professionally by wearing a suit or dress
- Remember that first impressions do matter
- Arrive 30 minutes or more prior to interview and give yourself a chance to gain your composure
- Be yourself but act professionally and polite at all times
- Make a good impression by making eye contact and smiling at the committee
- Avoid nervous mannerisms. Avoid playing with your hair and control your use of “uh,” “um,” and “like”
- Speak clearly and loudly—never simply answer with just “yes” or “no” to a question
- Be positive and enthusiastic
- It is okay to ask for clarification or to ask the committee to restate the question once
At the conclusion of your interview, thank the committee and send a thank-you letter.
