PULLMAN, Wash.—Summer is just as busy a time for Honors students as the academic year with undergraduate research, summer school, and studying abroad. several jump at the opportunity to study in new places on faculty-led programs during May and July.

For summer 2010, Honors College faculty members Jessica Cassleman and Kim Andersen will take groups of students to Peru and Scandinavia, respectively.  While abroad the two will teach an Honors class, and students traveling to Peru will also take a Spanish course.

Cassleman’s May 9-June 5 program, “Peru: ‘It’s Magical,’ The Land of the Incas” will be based in the capital, Lima.  During the four weeks the students will learn about Peruvian culture by staying in family homes and attending classes at the Universidad Científica del Sur.

Visits to historical sites such as “City of Kings” Historical Centre and the Convent and Church of San Francisco: Basilica of 21 Altars will enhance the work completed in the honors course.  A visit to the Inquisition Museum, el “Paseo de las Aguas” and the Anthropological Museum, and a guided tour to Pachacamac ruins will prepare students for the visit to Machu Picchu later in the trip.

Andersen’s July 1-15 “Scandinavia: Art & Cultures” will take students on a tour through Copenhagen, Stockholm, and Helsinki.  Noted for Scandinavian design and alternative energies, Denmark, Sweden, and Finland have developed into nations with vibrant social and arts scenes.

Students will experience contemporary life in the Scandinavian nations while searching for remnants of ancient Norse cultures in museums and sights to make connections between the past and the present.  Students embarking on Andersen’s trip spent the spring semester attending planning meetings to contribute to their experience.
