Poetry has been a constant in Ireland for centuries. It is part of the bedrock of the island’s culture. The Honors College is offering this program for students to study how poems have been made from the Irish landscape. The program will travel from Dublin to Galway, Sligo, Letterkenny, and Belfast to think about poetry in the context of the histories and landmarks that make Ireland a learning destination. This program is typically offered each summer, as interest allows.

Join the Honors College at WSU to explore literary Dublin, visit the Burren, the Cliffs of Moher, and Galway; read Yeats in Sligo; and travel to Derry and Belfast to learn about the Troubles. Earn 3 credits studying creative writing.

One island, two countries: contemporary Ireland, north and south, has sustained and developed its rich and highly textured culture in spite of numerous invasions, waves of immigration, and centuries of war and deforestation. Despite (or perhaps because of) it’s often traumatic history, this beautiful island has a world famous reputation for hospitality and a remarkable willingness to share its history, culture and environment with all who come to its shores. Our course provides a window into Irish history, literature and culture, discovering how the different histories of the north and the south have affected the development of the societies who currently call these places home.
