Honors Student Rachel Kliewer Named CCE “Service Star Winner” For March 2008

PULLMAN, Wash. – Each month Washington State University’s Center of Civic Engagement (CCE) recognizes a student who has shown exemplary commitment to service by recognizing them as “Service Star Winners.”

Rachel Kliewer, an Honors junior majoring in psychology, was nominated by staff at the campus Building Blocks Childcare Center where Kliewer volunteers and was chosen as the Service Star Winner for March.

Kliewer, from Battleground, Wash., began volunteering at Building Blocks Childcare Center in fall 2007.

According to her nominees, “She goes above and beyond by meeting children at their level and being enthusiastic about any activity or project in the classroom. She has been reliable and consistent in her attendance and interaction with children, and upon leaving the classroom she says good-bye to each child, acknowledging each child by name.”

Established at WSU in 1993, the CCE involves almost 20 percent of the undergraduate students on the Pullman campus in both curricular and co-curricular service learning. The CCE believes that community service learning experiences show students how to be more involved in the community, enhance student learning through interaction with the community, and help students to critically think about problems in the community.
