WSU Emeritus Society announces two undergraduate research awards, two grants for Honors College students

PULLMAN, Wash.—The Washington State University Emeritus Society of retired faculty members has announced that four of seven students selected to receive awards and grants to support their undergraduate research efforts are from the Honors College, group spokesman Tom Brigham said.

“As retired faculty from disciplines across the university, we feel it’s important to do what we can to encourage students’ research, scholarship, and creative activities,” said Brigham. “This allows us to contribute to the continued advancement of WSU, our community, and the state.

Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation has announced that Washington State University Honors College students Haley Morris and Gunnar Sly have each received $7,500 awards for the coming year, said April Seehafer, director of the WSU Distinguished Scholarships Program.

Two engineering and one science student at Washington State University have received prestigious, nationally competitive awards from the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program.

The students are seniors Courtney Klappenbach, a genetics and cellular biology and microbiology double major, and Kristian Gubsch, a chemical engineering major; and, junior Daniel Goto, the only student at WSU with a double major in electrical engineering and materials science engineering. » More …

Honors student, Hannah Utter, receives award in creative nonfiction

Hannah UtterHonors student, Hannah Utter, has been awarded the Western Regional Honors Council Literature Award in Creative Nonfiction. Her creative nonfiction essay was chosen by a faculty committee at the University of Wyoming and will be published in Scribendi—the Western Regional Honors Council’s literary magazine based at the University of New Mexico. Hannah has been invited to attend the WRHC annual conference and award ceremony in Bozeman, Montana, March 2019, to receive her cash prize and recognition.

Honors Faculty Fellow Sergey Lapin receives Arete Award from WSU Center for Fraternity and Sorority Life

Sergey LapinHonors Faculty Fellow Sergey Lapin received the Arete Award from the WSU Center for Fraternity and Sorority Life. The Arete Awards are given annually to three outstanding faculty members nominated by students in the Greek community. Dr. Lapin regularly teaches several popular Honors classes, including a seminar on scientific innovation and interdisciplinarity (HONORS 390), a seminar on Russian language, culture and history (HONORS 380), and the Honors Calculus courses. As one of his nomination letters said, “His honors classes always have a waitlist and if you don’t sign up right when enrollment begins you will not get in!”

Nam Nguyen, a Washington State University international business and marketing student, has been awarded the Region V Undergraduate Rising Star Award from the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA).
