WSU Honors College sends 8 students, 2 faculty to present at national honors conference in October

PULLMAN, Wash.—With poster topics from parallel computing to the Nipah virus, eight students and two faculty members from the Honors College at Washington State University will travel to Seattle Oct. 12-16 as invited presenters at the annual meeting of the National Collegiate Honors Council (NCHC).

The submission process for this 51st NCHC conference was highly selective, with hundreds of students and faculty submitting proposals, according to its website. The WSU Honors students’ posters will be available to the nearly 2,000 students and faculty who are expected to attend. » More …

Honors College student Angela Rocchi co-authors a paper titled “Perturbation of Critical Prolines in Gloeobacter violaceus Ligand-Gated Ion Channel (GLIC) Supports Conserved Gating Motions Among Cys-Loop Receptors” in the Journal of Biological Chemistry. With support from the Dean’s Notable Achievement Fund Angela was able to spend the summer at the University of Cambridge where her contributions to this work were made.

Honors College student Jared S. Brickman spent fall 2010 traveling three oceans and visiting 12 countries on four continents. Packaged as a Semester At Sea study abroad experience, the 109-day adventure proved a turning point for the (then) junior from Baker City, Oreg. In Portland, he says, a brief pre-sailing get-together with his friend Kelly became…“a meeting which served as the last memory of my old life.”He travelled with 600 other students aboard the MV Explorer, with its crew of 100. » More …

Three Honors Student-Athletes Are Selected for the All Pac-12 Academic Team

In spring 2012, Honors College students Brianne Gould, Erin Ranney, and Emily Farrar earned All Pac-12 Academic Team honors.

To be eligible for the All Pac-12 Academic Team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 overall grade-point average (GPA), take part in at least 50 percent of competitions, be a starter or significant contributor, and be in his or her second academic year at the institution. There are three categories of the All Pac-12 Academic Team: first-team, second-team, and honorable mention. To be eligible for first-team academic recognition, a student must have a minimum 3.50 GPA. » More …

PULLMAN, Wash. — Three seniors from the Honors College at Washington State University were awarded Big Ten Seniors recognition from the WSU Alumni Association (WSUAA).  Rachel Wanty, a neuroscience and Spanish double-major, and Omar Bayomy, a neuroscience major, earned the honor in the academics category, while Graham Dart, a music performance and economics major was recognized in visual and performing arts. » More …

Honors College Students Participate in WSU REU Program

PULLMAN, Wash.—Seven Honors College students are part of the largest Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program in the Northwest this summer at Washington State University.

REU is sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF), which allows students to research with professors for the summer. The goal of REU is to provide undergraduate students in engineering and related fields an opportunity to participate in ongoing active research programs.
