Honors Students Andrew Whitaker and Laura Hartner Selected As Highlight Students for WSU 2009 Commencement

PULLMAN, Wash.—Honors College students Andrew Whitaker and Laura Hartner received spotlight recognition at the Washington State University’s spring commencement on Saturday, May 9 as 2009 Highlight Students.

Whitaker, who graduated with a BA in foreign languages and cultures with an emphasis in Chinese and a BS in electrical engineering, was highlighted in two ceremonies. He received recognition from both the college of engineering and architecture and the college of liberal arts. After graduation, Whitaker plans on becoming a leader in business to solve society’s technology-related problems and to work in cooperation with China to improve relations.

Hartner, who obtained a BA in communication and broadcast production, was highlighted in the combined college of communications and college of liberal arts ceremony. She came to WSU after traveling across the U.S. in her Volkswagen bug for two years and documenting the experience on video. After graduation, she plans to explore the world and tell stories of its inhabitants through print, audio, and video.
