WSU Fall 2012 Honors College Commencement Recognizes Students, Faculty Member

PULLMAN, Wash. — Nineteen Washington State University Honors College students graduating in fall 2012 were feted at an Honors commencement ceremony Fri., Dec. 7 in Honors Lounge.

The class has much to be proud of, with 66 percent graduating with Latin Honors.

Dean Libby Walker delivered the evening’s address, entitled “To Dream the Impossible Dream.”

Honors student and piano performance major Eric McElroy provided musical entertainment by playing Chopin’s “Polonaise in A Major” and Grainger’s “Colonial Song” for the audience that included students’ parents and families as well as faculty and staff members.

Six students and one faculty member received special Honors recognition at the event.

The S. Town Stephenson Award recognizes students who demonstrated academic excellence and involvement throughout their baccalaureate program. The award acknowledges recipients’ interests across a diverse range of topics. The fall 2012 S. Town Stephenson Awards awardees are:

  • Kari Bray, journalism
  • Heather DeWitz, civil engineering
  • Michelle Maley, political science and finance
  • Jonathan Schillios, mechanical engineering
  • Emily Weeks, foreign languages/French

The Dean’s Award was presented to two graduating seniors.  This honor goes to students who exemplify the core values of the Honors College and challenge themselves to develop their potential to its fullest.  The fall 2012 recipients are Maley and Alexander Walker, a biochemistry major.

The Thesis Advisor Award was awarded to Matthew Weidenfeld, assistant professor of political science. He was nominated by Maley for “being helpful, knowledgeable, and supportive throughout (her) thesis process.”
