Nominations, applications sought for WSU Honors College Faculty Fellows

Washington State University faculty members who make significant contributions to the Honors College and its students can be nominated or apply through Friday, Feb. 15, 2019 to become a member of the fourth cohort of Honors Faculty Fellows.

“Exceptional faculty across the university support our mission and have an important impact on Honors College students. Through the Faculty Fellow courtesy title, we are pleased to recognize them publicly,” said Honors College Associate Dean David Shier.

Shier is the contact person for any questions. Information about eligibility and the application process is on the college website at https://honors.wsu.edu/honors-faculty-fellows/.  Final selections of fellows will be made by Dean M. Grant Norton, with the new fellowships beginning May 16, 2019.

Terms and eligibility

Tenured and tenure-track faculty, clinical track faculty, and instructors with current WSU appointments are eligible. Interested persons may apply, and nominations are welcome from deans, directors, and chairs. All nominees will be encouraged to submit applications until the Feb. 15 deadline, said Shier.

Honors Faculty Fellow appointments are for three years, but may be renewed by the dean. Fellows can apply for special funding, thanks to generous support from the Jonas family, to support activities related to their roles as fellows, such as developing a new course or program, or attending conferences related to research or teaching.

An applicant’s contributions to Honors can cover a wide range, said Shier. They might include: teaching for Honors, developing and leading faculty-led study- and research-abroad student programs, serving as a research mentor or directing an internship, serving on the Honors Council or advising the dean, and/or being an Honors College ambassador on campus.

Applicants should describe past, current, and proposed future contributions to the college. They should also secure a letter of endorsement from a recommender.

Fourth cohort

“Just as the first three cohorts reflected the breadth and depth of the Honors faculty base, we welcome applications from faculty across all disciplines at the university,” said Norton.

Honors Faculty Fellows were previously selected in spring of 2016, 2017 and 2018. In addition to those selected from nominations, Honors Distinguished Professors become Honors Faculty Fellows for three years upon completion of their appointments.
