Clara Krause Named 2024 NCHC Portz Scholar for Outstanding Research

By Gary Hyatt, WSU Honors College, gary.hyatt1@wsu.edu

We are thrilled to announce that Clara Krause has been named one of the four 2024 Portz Scholars by the National Collegiate Honors Council (NCHC)! This prestigious award is given annually to the top undergraduate honors students nationwide for their outstanding research and academic achievements.
Clara’s thesis, “The

Matrix Building: A History of Resilience,” was selected as the sole submission from WSU to represent our university in this highly competitive national competition. Her thesis not only highlights the rich cultural heritage of the minority communities in East Pasco, Washington, but also reflects her deep passion for historic preservation. Clara’s work on the Matrix Building is more than just a research paper; it is a powerful tribute to the resilience of these communities and a dedicated effort to secure their rightful place on the National Register of Historic Places.

Clara is one of 12 students within the Washington State University Honors College to receive the “Pass with Distinction” designation, the highest undergraduate thesis honor at WSU. Clara attributes much of her success to her thesis advisor and mentor, Professor Phil Gruen, whose support, and guidance helped nurture her passion for historic preservation. With his mentorship, Clara’s work has become a testament to her commitment to making a lasting impact in her field.
As a Portz Scholar, Clara will receive a $350 stipend and an opportunity to present her thesis at the National Collegiate Honors Council’s Annual Conference in Kansas City this October 30-November 2, 2024. Clara will join three other scholars in a special plenary session where she will present her findings and engage with attendees in a Q&A session. This will be a wonderful opportunity to showcase her dedication to historic preservation on a national stage.
Clara’s accomplishments are a source of great pride for all of us at The Honors College and WSU. Her ongoing work on the Matrix Building’s nomination for the National Register of Historic Places is another way Clara impacts the community around her.
