WSU Honors College Announces David Shier Joins Honors Council
PULLMAN, Wash.—Washington State University administrator David Shier is the newest member of the Honors Council, according to an announcement by Honors Dean Libby Walker.
“The Honors Council provides valuable leadership for our program. We certainly appreciate the input received from each member and are particularly pleased that Professor Shier, who has a long association with the Honors College, has agreed to serve on the council,” says Walker.
Shier, associate professor and chair of the Dept. of Philosophy, teaches the “Honors Introduction to Philosophy” (Phil 198) this fall semester. The class is learning the basics of philosophy and pondering the question of whether happiness is enough for “the good life.”
His areas of specialization are the philosophy of language and history of analytic philosophy, and other research and teaching areas of interest include logic, philosophy of mind, and epistemology. He earned his Ph.D. at Wayne State University.
The Honors Council draws on faculty members across the disciplines who have strong ties to the college. They provide guidance to the dean on curricular issues and program changes, and make decisions on student recipients of the Dean’s Award, the S. Town Stephenson Award, and the “pass with distinction” notation on their thesis.
Other members of the Honors Council are: Ursula Mazur, chair, from chemistry and materials science; Doug Call, veterinary microbiology and pathology; Bintong Chen, operations management/business; and Ray Sun, history.
