May 16: Leah Benedict to receive WSU Libraries’ Excellence Award

Leah BenedictPULLMAN, Wash. — Leah Benedict will receive the 2018 WSU Libraries’ Excellence Award during a 10 a.m. reception Wednesday, May 16, in the Terrell Library Atrium.

National scholarship recipient Kristian Gubsch with Professor Von Walden

Washington State University chemical engineering student Kristian Gubsch is the school’s first recipient of the prestigious Ernest F. Hollings Undergraduate Scholarship, administered by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

The nationally competitive award pays $19,000 total for the Edgewood, Wash., student’s 2018-19 and 2019-20 academic years, provides a 10-week paid summer internship at an NOAA facility, and funds travel to present at two scientific conferences. » More …

King, an environmental science graduate student at Washington State University, was one of 12 biologists conducting the first biological survey of the area known as La Ciudad Blanca or the Lost City of the Monkey God, astounding ruins first identified in 2012. » More …

Neuroscience Student Publishes Honors Thesis

Julianna BrutmanHonors College student and Goldwater Scholar Julianna Brutman majoring in Neuroscience has published the results of her Honors thesis in the peer-reviewed international journal Physiology & Behavior. Julianna’s thesis advisor was Professor Jon Davis in the Department of Integrative Physiology and Neuroscience at Washington State University. In summer 2016, Julianna wrote and was awarded a young investigator grant from Washington State ADARP (Alcohol and Drug Abuse Research Program) to investigate hypothalamic epigenetic changes in obese rodents exposed to a high-fat diet. Her data describing binge feeding in female rates was selected for a “hot topic” presentation at the international conference of The Obesity Society in November 2016. » More …

Lewis LeeThe Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco has named Lewis Lee, founding partner of Spokane-based Lee & Hayes PLLC intellectual-property law firm, to its Economic Advisory Council. The nine-member advisory council is part of the Twelfth Federal Reserve, which is largest by geography and size of its economy.

Lewis is a graduate of the Honors College and obtained a BS in Electrical Engineering and a BA in Business Administration from Washington State University before getting his JD from George Washington University School of Law. » More …
