Honors Faculty Fellow Sergey Lapin receives Arete Award from WSU Center for Fraternity and Sorority Life

Sergey LapinHonors Faculty Fellow Sergey Lapin received the Arete Award from the WSU Center for Fraternity and Sorority Life. The Arete Awards are given annually to three outstanding faculty members nominated by students in the Greek community. Dr. Lapin regularly teaches several popular Honors classes, including a seminar on scientific innovation and interdisciplinarity (HONORS 390), a seminar on Russian language, culture and history (HONORS 380), and the Honors Calculus courses. As one of his nomination letters said, “His honors classes always have a waitlist and if you don’t sign up right when enrollment begins you will not get in!”

Nam Nguyen awarded the NASPA Region V Undergraduate Rising Star Award.
Nam Nguyen, a Washington State University international business and marketing student, has been awarded the Region V Undergraduate Rising Star Award from the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA).

The WSU Ethics Bowl team at the Northwest Regional competition at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma on Nov. 10th, coached by Honors faculty member Nathan Nicol.

The WSU Ethics Bowl team (“The Kantsequentialists”) competed at The Northwest Regional Ethics Bowl Tournament this past Saturday, November 10. This year it was held at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma. The event was a great success in every respect except, well, winning. We did not win this year. The team from Whitworth (“The Philosoraptors”) won this year. Nevertheless, we had three hard fought matches, many interesting discussions, and met some nice folks on the other teams. On Sunday, we had an excellent brunch where several parents came to join us, and the rest was all tranquility.

Washington State football’s Hayden Schmidt and soccer’s Emma Dahline have been named the Academic Services Student-Athletes of the Month for September 2018.

A redshirt junior safety on the field, Schmidt (Mount Vernon, Wash.) is academically a senior majoring in mechanical engineering with a minor in Spanish. He is enrolled in the Honors College and a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon. Schmidt has a 3.73 grade point average, which he’s balanced while earning IFC Greek of the Year in 2017. » More …

As a freshman entering college, I was excited for the opportunity to take new and interesting classes that were not available to me in high school.

Even though I took four years of Spanish and received credit through a college-in-the-high-school program, I decided during orientation to enroll in Italian 101. I loved taking Spanish, but I’ve been interested in the Italian language and culture since childhood, and I knew taking it at WSU would be a valuable and enriching experience. » More …

2018 Honors College graduate Hayley Masterson presented her honors thesis at the American Psychological Association meeting in San Francisco in August. Hayley worked with Honors Faculty Fellow Dr. Phyllis Erdman (WSU College of Education) and Dr. Lori Kogan (Colorado State University College of Veterinary Medicine) in the 2nd cohort of the Human-Animal Interaction Collaborative (HAIC) between the honors colleges of WSU and CSU. Hayley graduated in microbiology and her honors thesis (“Animal Loss and Grief Experience of Pet Owners: How to prepare pet owners for the end of life process”) received “Pass with Distinction.”

Honors thesis research published in Neuropharmacology

Chloe Erickson and Professor Brendan WalkerThe results of Honors student Chloe Erickson’s thesis have recently been published in the international journal Neuropharmacology. Chloe worked with Honors Faculty Fellow Professor Brendan Walker in the Laboratory of Alcoholism and Addictions Neuroscience at Washington State University. The research investigated factors that affect alcohol dependence. Chloe graduated in neuroscience and was recognized with an Auvil Award for undergraduate research.
