Honors students and alumni attend Mount Vernon Leadership Fellows program

Honors students and alumni at historic Mount VernonThis month Honors College students and graduates Alyssa Norris, Savannah Rogers, Matthew Winchell, and Garrett Kalt gathered at the historic site of Mount Vernon for the alumni weekend of the Mount Vernon Leadership Fellows program. Each year since the leadership program first began in 2014, WSU has been represented by a student fellow from the Honors College. This year, Matthew Winchell attended the six-week leadership program and Garrett Kalt was selected as the student intern for the summer.

Washington State University chemical engineering student Kristian Gubsch is the school’s first recipient of the prestigious Ernest F. Hollings Undergraduate Scholarship, administered by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

The nationally competitive award pays $19,000 total for the Edgewood, Wash., student’s 2018-19 and 2019-20 academic years, provides a 10-week paid summer internship at an NOAA facility, and funds travel to present at two scientific conferences. » More …

Trekking through one of the largest unexplored rain forests in the world, La Mosquitia in Honduras, Travis King set up traps last spring to catch jaguars — or whatever other animal came into range of the cameras.

King, an environmental science graduate student at Washington State University, was one of 12 biologists conducting the first biological survey of the area known as La Ciudad Blanca or the Lost City of the Monkey God, astounding ruins first identified in 2012. » More …
